Bulletin 5 | 22 September 2025

Since the last bulletin, 10 September, the water level in Mopti rose by 18 cm, from 615 cm on 10 September to 633 cm on 19 September. That is, on average, 2 cm a days, and shows that the rise in water levels has levelled off considerably. The water level in Mopti on 19 September was 35 cm lower than the level at the same date last year, with a very high flood, but 63 higher than the year before, with a modest flood. It is expected, that the water level will only rise a little in the coming weeks and the peak will be reached in Mopti around half of October, and the flood will be at its maximum in Akka in the end of November or early December. The flood will be comparable with the floods in the years 2020-2021.

Based on the current prediction, the south-western part of the Inner Niger Delta may become available for grazing cattle in December. Using the relationship between peak flood level in Mopti and the annual date when the cows are allowed to enter the Inner Niger Delta at Diafarabé, it is expected that the cattle can cross the river at Diafarabé early December.
