In the past two weeks the water level in Mopti rose by 26 cm, from 548 cm on 8 September to 574 cm on 21 September. That is, on average, 2 cm a day. The water level is this year in Mopti on 21 September was 76 cm lower than last year on this date, and also lower as the four years before. OPIDIN predicts that the water level in Mopti will raise at most another c. 20 cm and reach a peak in Mopti in the first half of October.
OPIDIN makes every day a new prediction of the maximum water level. This prediction has not changed in the past weeks. Since no significant rainfall is expected in the coming weeks in the Upper Niger, the expected flood height will not change. It is therefore already certain that the flood level this year will be moderate, and significantly lower than in the past five years.
