Based on the information available on 7 September, OPIDIN predicts that the flood of 2023 will certainly be not as high as in 2018, 2020 and 2022 (when the floods were very high). The flood in 2023 will probably be even a bit lower than in 2019 and 2021 (average floods), but certainly much higher than in 2017 ( a low flood).
The water level in Mopti has increased another 28 cm last week (1 – 7 September), reaching a level (544 cm) being 100 cm lower than on 7 September in 2018 and in 2020 (when the floods were very high), but 10 cm higher than on 7 September 2019 (when the flood was relatively low compared to the last ten years). Hence OPIDIN predicts for 2023 that the flood will still rise not more than about 50 cm the coming weeks.
