Bulletin 2 | 15 August 2024

Bulletin 2 | 15 August 2024

Water levels in Mopti are currently very high, reaching far above the water levels of recent years. It is therefore likely that 2024 will be a year with a very high flood. However, the flood prediction is still unsure and may vary depending the amount of rainfall in the coming weeks.

The water level in Mopti has risen by 76 cm within a week, from 478 cm on 8 August to 554 cm on 14 August. That water level is 148 cm higher than the level last year at this time, and 45 cm higher than in 2022, a year with a high flood. As announced in the previous bulletin, water levels in Mopti are very high this year. Comparable water levels at this time of year were only measured in the 1950s and 1960s in the former century. OPIDIN predicts that the peak flood in 2024 will be high, may be even higher than recent high floods in 2018, 2020 and 2022

At present we are halfway the rainy season and still much can change depending on the rainfall in the Upper Niger River during the coming weeks. The forecast for rainfall in the comings weeks is below average for the upper reaches in Guinea, but above average for the regions in southern part of Mali.

The flood prediction is still unsure and may vary depending the amount of rainfall in the coming weeks. Given the current high water levels in Mopti, the peak flood this year is likely to be high.
