Bulletin 1 | 4 August 2025

The new 2025-2026 flood season has begun and from now on OPIDIN offers regular bulletins until the water level in Mopti has reached its peak level. The information on water levels is updated weekly, and the predicted flood level can be followed via the flood forecast page.

The water level in Mopti reached a level of 430 cm on the 4th of August. The water level is 34 cm lower than the level at the same date last year but 10-80 cm higher than the two year before. The water level in Mopti and at other hydrological stations in the delta is likely to be so high at this time of the flooding season as a result of last year's very high flooding. However, the rainfall in the upper reaches of the Niger and Bani rivers during the last four months has been far below average, in particular in June and July. This is reflected in the slow rise of the water level: in the last ten days the water level rose 6 cm, compared to 15 cm last year during the same period. The rainfall forecast for the coming weeks is also below normal in the Upper Niger Basin. It is still early August, so we are only halfway the rainy season and much can change depending on the rainfall during the coming weeks.

Given the current water levels and simultaneous low rainfall in the upper reaches of the Niger and Bani, it is likely that the maximum flood level in 2025 will be much lower than in the last year. The flood prediction is still unsure and may vary depending on the amount of rainfall the coming weeks.
