The water level in Mopti has increased with another 13 cm in the last two weeks (15 – 24 September), reaching a level of 675 cm on 24 September. The daily rise in the water level is now clearly decreasing. The current water level is as high as the maximum level in 2022, the last year with a high flood. Comparable high water level on this date were only measured in the years 1920-1930, when the peak level in Mopti was well above 700 cm. The water level reached on 24 September is already 18 - 40 cm higher than in three recent years with extremely high flood levels (2018, 2020 and 2022). Forecasts are for continued above-average rainfall in the upstream area.
OPIDIN predicts that the maximum of the flood will be markedly higher than in 2018, 2020 and 2022 (670 - 675 cm in Mopti). The maximum flood height may become as high as the highest floods measured, above 700 cm.
