The water level in Mopti increased by another 8 cm last week to 600 cm on 9 October, and 22 cm compared to the previous bulletin on 25th September. OPIDIN predicts that the flood has nearly reached its peak, and will not rise significantly any more the coming weeks. Hence, the inundation in the Inner Niger Delta is modest, and significantly lower than the five years before.
The predicted peak in Mopti this year will be 600-611 cm, and thus 64-75 cm lower than last year. In recent year rather high flood levels were frequent. In the past 15 years lower flood levels were encountered in 2011, 2014 and 2017, with comparable or lower flood levels than this flooding season. The peak in Mopti will be reached before or around half October and the flood will be at its maximum in Akka just before or around half November and in Dire at the end of November.
Based on the current prediction, the south-western part of the Inner Niger Delta may become available for grazing cattle in the last week of November.
